Leadership Profiles

Gary Mayes

Executive Director of churchNEXT
Joined Novo in June 1997

What motivates you in your leadership role with ChurchNEXT?

I believe God has positioned and invited us to make a profound impact on the work of the church in the world. We share and live out the prophetic integration of Abiding and Action, of passionate intimacy with Christ as well as engagement with his mission. We are a people committed to multiplication not merely improvement. And, when you put these together, I believe we have the unique opportunity to radically extend the movement Jesus longs to see in the world.

What do you hope to be the ultimate contribution of your life's calling? What do you hope to see God accomplish through you?

I want to see a new normal on every level of life and leadership in the body of Christ: the recovery and living out of our missionary DNA -- a life of intimacy, mission, and power.

In addition, as I look at the next chapter of my life, I am focused on raising up and giving my life away to leaders that are 25 or more years behind me.

If you had a afternoon free and could choose what to do for fun, what would you choose?

I would get outdoors getting some exercise (on my road bike probably) or with my camera capturing beauty.

What did you do before you joined CRM/Novo?

I was a pastor for 20 years at 4 different Churches in Southern California and Chicago.

What equipping resources have you created that we should tell others about?

My book, DNA of a Revolution: 1st Century Breakthroughs that will Transform the Church, and the companion workbook, DNA of a Revolution: Small Group Experience.

Margaret Mayes

Director of Strategic Prayer
Joined Novo in June 1997

What motivates you in your leadership role with ChurchNEXT?

I believe prayer moves the hand of God.

What do you hope to be the ultimate contribution of your life's calling? What do you hope to see God accomplish through you?

It’s hard to select just one thing, I long to see God do so much. I long to see prayer moved to the forefront—to the place of intentionality—so that we go after what matters through prayer and get to see God move as a result. I long to help people see Jesus at work all around them—to have their eyes opened everyday, everywhere, in the good and in the bad. And I long to see young women become leaders through my coaching, mentoring, and caring support.

Overall, it means I want the impact of my life to result in lots of people discovering meaningful relationship with Jesus as they learn to see God at work in their lives everyday.

If you had a afternoon free and could choose what to do for fun, what would you choose?

If cost and distance are no issue, I would spend the afternoon at Disneyland.

What did you do before you joined CRM/Novo?

I was a teacher with at-risk minority students for 24 years.

Matt Weston

Managing Director of ChurchNEXT
Joined Novo in February 2009

What motivates you in your leadership role with ChurchNEXT?

I believe that ChurchNEXT is uniquely positioned as an apostolic band of missionaries to effect real and lasting change...both within the Church that is and the Church that God is cultivating. We carry within us a unique DNA and a prophetic assignment, and I'm hugely motivated to see how God invites us to participate with Him in seeing the Kingdom come.

What do you hope to be the ultimate contribution of your life's calling? What do you hope to see God accomplish through you?

I hope that the ultimate outcome of my life is that the Kingdom of God is advanced in and around me. I long to see leaders move with tenacity and courage to participate with God in His work of renewal and restoration in the world. I long to see the fruit of the Spirit cultivated in the midst of a chaotic and tumultuous age. I long to see our cities and neighborhoods renewed as God brings His Kingdom on Earth, even as it is in Heaven.

If you had a afternoon free and could choose what to do for fun, what would you choose?

This is a tough one to answer, because I could think of a ton of fun ways to spend an afternoon. I could imagine a great afternoon spent with friends and neighbors at our house playing board games. I can imagine a great afternoon spent with my wife and boys, hiking and camping together. Or...I can imagine a fantastic afternoon spent with friends watching a few games and eating chicken wings at my favorite sports bar.

What did you do before you joined CRM/Novo?

I gave leadership to a national kids camp organization.

Jennifer Weston

Director of New Staff Onboarding
Joined Novo in February 2009

What motivates you in your leadership role with ChurchNEXT?

The onboarding process tends to be a significant time in our staff’s lives. It is a time of great transition that can bring chaos to one’s identity, one’s family, and possibly even calling. This chaos can cause staff to be tired and beat down before even beginning their new task to which the Lord has called them. ChurchNEXT would like each of our new staff to be able to begin their new work refreshed with a feeling that the Holy Spirit has breathed new life into their lungs and that they have had a partner to walk through this journey of discovery with them.

What do you hope to be the ultimate contribution of your life's calling? What do you hope to see God accomplish through you?

I would hope to see people around me restored and renewed because of their encounter with the Holy Spirit. There are so many hurting and fatherless people in our city and our world. There would be no greater joy in my life than to be able to show them the love they can freely receive from their Heavenly Father through the way my family lives and serves.

I also pray the time spent parenting and teaching my boys brings them closer to their Heavenly Father everyday. I pray they would grow to be humble servants who want to bring change and justice to whatever part of the world they live.

If you had a afternoon free and could choose what to do for fun, what would you choose?

I would grab a book and head to the Mississippi River which runs through downtown Memphis. I would walk for a while and then find a quiet spot to sit and read and watch people.

What did you do before you joined CRM/Novo?

An accountant and a mom.

Jill Randall

Director of Staff Vitality
Joined Novo in September 2014

What motivates you in your leadership role with ChurchNEXT?

I am honored to be able to walk with our leaders with the multiple roles of spiritual director/coach/mentor/shepherd, combining these as the need arises. We have incredible leaders in ChurchNEXT, missionaries that are changing the world in so many different ways, creatively bringing the Kingdom into their context and relationships. If I can help them flourish, live well, and stay healthy (as I give attention to their whole person), I believe I can help them sustain well. There is nothing more beautiful to me than a thriving kingdom servant, enjoying his or her life as a child and friend of God.

What do you hope to be the ultimate contribution of your life's calling? What do you hope to see God accomplish through you?

I want my legacy to be a life that was given away. I want to see people equipped and mobilized to be a true Kingdom person, doing all the stuff that Jesus did! All the while, knowing who they are and the power that lives inside of them to accomplish great things for God. I want to see people loving God, loving others and loving their neighbors with all their heart, soul, mind and strength, because of journeying with me. And then take what they have learned, and in turn, give it all away!

If you had a afternoon free and could choose what to do for fun, what would you choose?

I love to walk and hike, when weather permits here in Idaho! But, probably equal to that would be an afternoon in the kitchen. I love to cook and create something from nothing, or try a new recipe. I am definitely a foodie, so I love anything to do with good food: shop for it, create it, go out for it and especially eat it!

What did you do before you joined CRM/Novo?

I co-founded and directed Life Equipping Community, an academic and experiential ministry school in Redding and San Francisco, CA. Alongside that job, I helped my husband pastor our church, Risen King in Redding, for nearly 20 years. Before that, I was a special education teacher for an alternative high school.

What equipping resources have you created that we should tell others about?

I blog at www.jillrandallreflections.com.

JD Ward

Director of Transforming Leaders
Joined Novo in April 2008

What motivates you in your leadership role with ChurchNEXT?

I love seeing people on fire for Christ and to be a light in the painful places of the world. When people are fully living out their calling it is exciting to walk with them on their adventure.

What do you hope to be the ultimate contribution of your life's calling? What do you hope to see God accomplish through you?

I am working toward creating an order that will give people the spirituality to engage and thrive in the mission of God. If I could see the next generation of leaders live fully into equipping everyday people with a deep spirituality and a deep engagement with the poor I would feel my mission is complete.

If you had a afternoon free and could choose what to do for fun, what would you choose?

I would go to the beach and have drinks and appetizers with my wife.

What did you do before you joined CRM/Novo?

I was a mission pastor for 15 years and I led a gang youth ministry for 5 years.

What equipping resources have you created that we should tell others about?

We have developed a series of courses we call "Beyond." Beyond is designed to enflame a heart for the mission of God. We have also developed a year long process to help equip a person to live on mission. This process is called "Deep Waters." Finally, we have created a 2 year process, called the "Missional Leader Cohort" that offers a certificate in Missional Spiritual Formation. These can be found on the ReWire team website.
